This week we began our Dinosaur Unit! We explored a variety of dinosaur stories and videos and stretched our minds learning new dino facts!
Here is a look at the week:
Morning Meeting:
We read a variety of non-fiction and fiction texts about dinosaurs. We focused on the T-Rex and Stegosaurus and described the characteristics of this dinosaur compared to other animals. We talked about what dinosaurs eat and their daily life. Also, we saw a few videos from PBS and Dino Train. The kids are always captivated by these videos!
Langauge Arts:
The topic for journals this week was, "If the dinosaurs came back...". The kiddos all agreed that the dinosaurs would be friendly and that they would play with them! One student even thought that they would come back the color of a rainbow!
PE:
Math:
For math this week the kiddos practiced counting with dino mats and cubes. The kiddos made "trees" with the cubes and and placed them on the corresponding number on the mat.
Craft:
To begin the week the kiddos designed their own dinosaurs using green cut out shapes. They were so imaginative and even created their own dinosaur name! Their finished work is being showcased on the classroom door.
Sensory:
The kiddos LOVED playing with the kinetic sand! Each morning during free choice the kids were drawn to the table with the sand. They pretended to be paleontologists and dig for fossils. We also started a "Dino Dig" and began to excavate a T-Rex skeleton using tools to "unearth" the "fossils" from a block of clay. Next week we will continue to excavate and then assemble the T-Rex. The kiddos also helped to make fossils using plaster of paris.
Art:
The children completed their February monthly self-portrait. It is so fun to see how much these pictures have changes from the beginning of the year!
Writing:
The children are working so hard on their daily sign-in's. Each morning the kiddos practice writing their names using the correct formation. We focus on correct pencil grip and writing from the "sky" to the "ground."
Reading Buddies:
We always love catching up with our 5th grade friends!
Mystery Reader:
Our Mystery Reader this week was Junior Kindergarten Teaching Assistant Ms. Luibin! She read "Pinkalicious" to the kiddos and they LOVED it!
Birthday Celebrations:
Happy Birthday to James and Zoe!
Special Note: If you are interested in Summer Camp now is a good time to enroll! I am the lead teacher in the morning session and Ms. Luibin is the lead teacher in the afternoon.
