Fairy Tales...continued!

This week we continued our Fairy Tales Unit. We read many stories including, The Three Little Pugs and the Big Bad Cat, Jack and the BeanstalkCinderella, George and the Dragon, The Ugly Ducking, and Joe Giants Missing Boot.

POPCORN WORDS: We have been working hard at reading CVC words! I have also introduced short sentences during Circle Time and ask the kiddos to identify the first word, last word, the capital letter, and the period. We then identify the letters and sounds in each word and sound them out by stretching out the word. This week we began to learn "popcorn words." Popcorn words are words that "pop up" frequently in writing and reading. Many popcorn words are called "sight words" - sight words do not follow phonetic rules. Recognizing popcorn words is a skill that leads to fluency. We will continue to practice popcorn words weekly.

JOURNALS: This week the kiddos dictated their responses to the question, "What would you wish for if you had a magic wand?"

Three Little Pigs STEM Challenge: Each kiddo got to build a house for their "little pig." The houses needed to be able to withstand the huffing and puffing of "The Big Bad Wolf Blow Dryer" and not fall down! The kiddos used toothpicks and Dots to build their houses. After the houses were complete we "tested" the structure of their houses to see if the wolf could blow their houses down! Ask your Pre-K kid if their house was blown down!

"Jack and the Beanstalk" Fine Motor Activity: This activity focused on fine motor control. The kiddos were encouraged to glue beans to make a design.

JACK AND THE BEANSTALK ACTIVITY: BUILD A CASTLE IN THE CLOUDS: The kiddos loved this book so I thought it would be fun to build a castle in the clouds like the story. This STEM and sensory activity was the perfect extension for the book.

ICE CASTLE EXCAVATION - The kiddos had a blast trying to chip away at the ice to collect the gems, necklaces, and coins! For the excavation the children used droppers, popsicle sticks and warm water. The kiddos continued to chip away until all of the treasure was accounted for and placed in plastic cups.

PROCESS ART: We finished our Multi-Stage Process Art this week. Look how pretty it turned out!

CHINESE NEW YEAR - The kiddos enjoyed celebrating the Chinese New Year with their Upper School Buddies!

Parent Visitation Day: It was nice welcoming parents into our class. Parents experienced PE, Music, Morning Meeting, Snack and Centers! Hope you enjoyed living the life of a Pre-K kid...at least for a couple of hours :)

Mystery Reader: This weeks mystery read was Zach's mom! Thank you Mrs. Bireta for coming in and reading to us!
