Fall...continued!

This week we continued our fall unit. We explored painting with pine cones, counting with corn kernels, and made salt dough. The kiddos worked very hard on their sign-in's and zoo phonics.  We also spent all week preparing our gifts for Grandparents Day. The gifts are top secret but we know that the Pre-K kiddos Grandparents are going to LOVE them!

Letters vs Numbers
The kiddos practiced identifying letters and numbers!

Turkey Math
This week we practiced measuring with unifex cubes. We answered the following questions:
How many cubes long is the turkey?
How many cubes wide is the turkey?
How many cubes does it take to fill the turkey?

Sign-in's
The kiddos are working very hard on signing in a few times each week. We focus on letter formation, pencil grip, and legible writing. We focus on developing strong printing skills with easy letter formation language - big line, little line, big curve, little curve, sky, grass, fence, etc. We use double lines and line generalization activities that promote legible writing. When children know how to place letters, they can write well on any style of lines paper.

Mystery Readers
This week we had two very special Mystery Readers - Isla's mom and Carolyn's mom! It is alway very fun to see your mom walk through the Pre-K door on Mystery Reader days!

Tornado Drill
On Tuesday we had a Tornado Drill. Before the drill we talked about the weather and how sometimes it is windy or rainy, sometimes sunny or snowy, hot or cold. Rather than focusing about how scary and powerful tornadoes can be - we kept the description simple: "It gets windy and warm when warm air and cold air mix around together. Sometimes this mixture of warm and cold air makes very strong winds that come close to the ground, and when this happens its called a tornado. Tornados are shaped like funnels and spin, kind of like tops, and they can be very strong."  We then talked about how tornado drills help us practice what to do and where to go if there is a tornado warning. During the drill we walked to the hallway (a protected, inner part of our school) and sat against the wall with our hands protecting our head.
