Dinosaurs

This week we continued our Dinosaur Unit! We explored a variety of dinosaur stories and videos and stretched our minds learning new dino facts!

Here is a look at the week:

Morning Meeting:
We read a variety of non-fiction and fiction texts about dinosaurs. We focused on the T-Rex and Stegosaurus and described the characteristics of these dinosaurs. We talked about what they ate and about their daily lives. We also watched a few informative videos from PBS Kids and Brain Pop Junior.

Language Arts:
The topic for journals this week was, "If you were a dinosaur.....(an Alicia-O-Saurus....or a Joe-O-Saurus.....)....tell me about yourself. What would you look like? What would you eat? Etc."

Initial Sounds:
Mr. Bailey worked with the kids on initial sounds. The children were shown a picture and they had to tell us what the picture was and the first sound of the word, and then tell us what letter makes that sound.

Book Look:
When the kiddos finish their snack every morning they are encouraged to pick out a book and find a comfy spot in the room. This week the kids LOVED looking at all the pictures in the dino books and having fun conversations with friends.

Math:
For math this week the kiddos practiced counting with dino mats and cubes. The kiddos made "trees" with the cubes and then placed them on the corresponding number on the mat.  In another math center the kiddos counted the number of dinos on the card and then had to find the corresponding number and place a clothespin on that number.

Fine Motor Craft:
The kiddos designed their own dinosaurs using green cut out shapes. They were so imaginative and came up with some great designs! Their finished work is being showcased on the classroom door.

Paleontologist
The Pre-K class was lucky enough to receive a visit from a real Paleontologist! Ms. Kristie read us a book and talked to us about fossils! She said next time she visits she can bring us dinosaur poop!!!!

Sensory:
The kiddos LOVED playing with the moon sand and dinosaur fossils in the sensory table. Each morning during free choice the kids were drawn to the dino dig and loved pretending to be Paleontologists. The center was equipped with paleontologist tools such as hats, badges, brushes and a guide book.

Writing:
The children are working hard on their daily sign-in's. A few times a week the kiddos practice writing their names using the correct formation. We focus on correct pencil grip and writing from the "sky" to the "grass."

Matching:
Working on memory skills and taking turns the kiddos played a dino matching game.

Mystery Reader:
This week our Mystery Reader was Joe's mom! She read a funny book called, Don't eat your classmates! The kiddos loved it! Thanks for reading to us Mrs. Moore!

Making Valentines with 6th Grade Buddies

Friendship Color Mixing
To begin the activity we talked about the three primary colors and how when mixed they make a secondary color. The kiddos were asked to paint their own hand and then rub their hand with a friends hand to mix the paint in order to create a new color.
