Chicka Chicka Boom Boom...continued!

Exploring a Coconut - Early in the week during circle time we passed around a coconut and discussed what we saw, felt, smelled, heard and tasted!

Sink or Float - On Monday we talked about what it means to float and sink. Once we understood the vocabulary, we then discussed whether we thought coconuts would float or sink when placed in water. Half of the students thought that coconuts would float, and half thought that it would sink because "it is heavy." We then tested our hypotheses and placed a coconut in a tub of water. Ask your Pre-K kid what happened next!!!

Number Match - This week the kiddos practiced counting coconuts and matching them to the correct number!

Letter Hunt - The kiddos had a blast hunting for letters all over our school. Every time we found a letter we practiced saying the letter's name and the sound associated with the letter.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Tree Craft - This week we worked hard constructing Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Trees using construction paper. The kiddos practiced holding scissors correctly and cutting on a straight line.

Zoo Phonics - Most days during Circle Time we practice learning all about our "zoo friends" and what sounds they make! Ask your kiddo if they know what sound "Catina Cat" makes!

Bingo - This week we played letter bingo. This game helped us practice letter recognition and identification!

Library - Each week the kiddos enjoy library time with Mrs. Fisher.  The children experience a read aloud and get to check out a book to take home!

Boom Boom Letter Stick Game - To play this game we all sat in a circle and took turns picking sticks from a cup. Most of the sticks have letters on them, and some of the sticks have "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" on them! If the kids picked a stick with a letter on it, they were asked to identify that letter, and then keep the stick. If they chose a stick with "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" on it, they had to give one stick back. At the end, the player with the most sticks won the game!

Mystery Reader - This week our Mystery Reader was Kindergarten Teacher - Ms. Strain! She read the book, "A Duck on a Bike."

Sign In's - This week some of the students began their sign-in's. During sign-in's the kiddos practice writing the letters in their name using correct pencil grip and letter formation. We work from top to bottom moving from either the "sky" to the "grass" or from the "fence" to the "grass."

Next week we will begin our Pumpkin Unit!!

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

This week we dove into our “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” unit based on the book by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault.  Here is a look at the corresponding activities for the week!

Morning Meeting: This week we read the story, “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” in many different ways! On Monday we did a classic read aloud. On Tuesday we watched an interactive YouTube video based on the book. Later in the week, we read the story and placed magnetic letters on the whiteboard as we heard them in the book. The kiddos really liked this activity! It is fun to read the same book in a variety of ways!

Zoo Phonics: This week we learned the letters “C” and “D.” Ask your child if they remember what “Catina Cat” and “Dee Dee Deer” say! Do they know the hand motions that go with the letter sounds?

Language Arts: The kiddos went on a letter hunt in the sensory bin. They had to use tweezers to pull out a letter and then find the matching letter on their Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Letter Mat. Once they found the letter they stamped it out using dot paint. The children also participated in a letter pick up! We scattered alphabet letters on the rug and the kids picked up the letters in ABC order. They practiced both lowercase and uppercase letters!

Math: We rolled dice, counted the dots and then colored in the correct number on our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Tree Mat. We also played, "Where's that Crazy Coconut?" The kiddos had a blast playing the game and practicing identifying numbers.

Fine Motor: To practice both our fine motor skills and counting we strung coconuts (beads) on pipe-cleaner coconut trees!

Magnetic Letter Match: The kiddos practiced naming the letters and finding their match on the white board.

STEAM Challenge: Can you build an alphabet tree? How many letters does it hold? Our Pre-K kids LOVED this challenge!

Journals: Tell me about a time you climbed up a tree? What happened?

Mystery Reader: This week our mystery reader was Head of School, Mrs. Finely Odell. She read, "The Wonderful Book."
