"The Mitten" is an Ukrainian Folktale that tells the story of Nicki's missing mitten. One day, Nicki drops his mitten in the snow and goes on without realizing that it is missing. One by one, woodland animals find it and crawl in. The ending is quite silly! Ask your Pre-K kid if they remember how the story ends. HINT: ahhhhhhhhh-chooooooo!
On Monday we had fresh snow on the playground so we spent a lot of time playing in the snow and making snow angels!
On Tuesday we played a Snowman Math Game. The goal of the game was to build a cube tower and have it match the number on the snowman board. We also completed a response-to-reading journal. The kids were asked to complete the sentence, "My mitten is so big a __________ could fit inside!" The kids were then asked to draw a picture of the animal or item that they choose.
On Wednesday the kids practiced their scissor skills and cut out pictures of the animals in "The Mitten." We then read the story again and completed a sequencing activity. The children glued down the animals in the order that they appeared in the story. The kids also practiced counting using buttons and numbered mittens.
On Thursday the kiddos acted out "The Mitten." Each child choose to be an animal in the story. The kiddos choose to be either the hedgehog, bear, mouse, fox, rabbit, mole, or badger. The Pre-K kids enjoyed acting out the story!
The kiddos also practiced their fine motor skills and counting by "sewing a mitten."
On Friday we welcomed our 5th/6th grade Reading Buddies into our classroom. Our Pre-K kids always look forward to this activity! It's so much fun to watch friendships forming over books and play.
During centers the kiddos made Water Color & Salt Mittens. First, the kiddos covered their card-stock mitten in glue, then sprinkled salt over the glue, and then used water color paint to create a beautiful design! The salt helped to create a beautiful texture that looked like snow.
Our Mystery Reader this week was Middle & Upper School Art Teacher - Mrs. Hecht! Mrs. Hecht read the book, "Farley Found It" by Bruce Van Patter.
