Author Study: Mo Willems

This week we began our Mo Willems author study. We read the books - The Duckling Gets a Cookie, Don't Let The Pigeon Drive the Bus, The Pigeon Wants a Puppy and The Pigeon Needs a Bath.

In the book, The Duckling Gets a Cookie, Duckling acts as a clever and calming conscience for the impulse-driven Pigeon. With a subtle touch, Duckling helps Pigeon learn that asking politely for things is much more effective than aggressively demanding them! After reading the story, we discussed the main idea and practiced asking nicely for things around the room. During centers, the Pre-K kids made their own cookie craft working on fine motor skills and creativity.

Don't Let The Pigeon Drive the Bus is about a bus driver who has to leave, so he asks the reader to not allow the pigeon to drive the bus. The pigeon tries many excuses and tries to finagle readers into letting the pigeon drive the bus.  Before reading the story, the Pre-K kids were asked if they thought the pigeon should or should not be able to drive the bus. All of the kids answered, "No!" The kiddos said that the pigeon could crash or drive off the road.

Before reading The Pigeon Wants a Puppy and The Pigeon Needs a Bath, the kiddos made predictions.  I covered up the words, "puppy" and "bath" and the kids were asked to guess what the pigeon wanted and what the pigeon needed. Some of the kids guessed that the pigeon wanted - cake, orange juice, and a cookie!  They also guessed that the pigeon needed a shower based on the picture of the dirty pigeon on the cover of the book!  These two books led to great discussions about wants vs. needs. (We are going to talk more about this next week!)  For journals this week the children illustrated and dictated their answer to the question - What is one thing you really want?

During math centers this week the children played a Pigeon Counting Game. Each kiddo had a pigeon cut out and a cup filled with 10 cubes. The children were instructed to dump out the cubes on top of the pigeon. Then they were to count how many cubes fell on top of the pigeon and then count how many fell on the table. We began to use the language of adding two numbers together. - "plus" and "equals."

On Friday we enjoyed spending time with our Reading Buddies as well as a visit from our Mystery Reader!

Reminders: It's getting COLD! Please make sure your kiddo is prepared for outdoor recess - gloves, hats, snow pants....the works!
