Fairy Tales...continued!

This week we continued our Fairy Tales Unit.  We read many stories including: Cinderella, Pinkalicious, Emeralalicious, GoldaliciousRapunzel, The 3 Little Dassies, and Alice the Fairy.

POPCORN WORDS: This week we began to learn "popcorn words." Popcorn words are words that "POP UP!" frequently in reading and writing.  Many popcorn words are called "sight words" - sight words do not follow regular phonetic rules.  Recognizing popcorn words is a skill that leads to fluency. We will continue to practice popcorn words weekly.

PALIO: This week PK, JK, and K had Junior Palio! Palio is Roycemore's oldest tradition.  It is modeled after the pageant that proceeds the Palio di Siena in Italy. The students display the progress they have made in physical education classes during the year. The emphasis is on rhythmics, dance, gymnastics, and sports skills. Royecmore's Palio has a colorful procession, where each new Kindergarten class is handed down a banner with the coat of arms from the graduation Senior class that the younger students will carry until graduation in twelve grade.

SELF-PORTRAITS:

JOURNALS: This week the kiddos dictated their response to the question, "What would you do if you had a magic wand?"

Three Little Pigs STEM Activity: Each kiddo got to build a house for their "little pig." The house needed to be able to withstand the "big bad wolf blow dryer" and not fall down! The kiddos used toothpicks and Dots to build their houses. After the houses were complete we "tested" their houses to see if the "big bad wolf blow dryer" could blow their houses down! Ask your Pre-K kid if their house was blown down!

Foam Blocks - Engineering & Art: First, we observed a toy castle. We noticed the shapes that made up the castle - triangles, rectangles and squares. Then the kiddos designed and engineered their castle using foam blocks. After they were done engineering their castle, they removed one block at a time, dipped it into paint and inserted it back into its spot. When all the blocks were used for printing, we removed the blocks one at a time. The kiddos were amazed with what was underneath!
