Spring/Plants

This week we welcomed everyone back from Spring Break! One of our kiddos said he did not like Spring Break because he wanted to be at school. This made the teachers smile :)

We began our week by reading the book, And Then It's Spring by Julie Fogliano. The book is about a young boy and his dog who have had enough of winter and decided to plant a garden. This week we turned our sensory bin into a garden and the kiddos "planted" flowers using gardening tools and gloves. The kids loved exploring and getting messy!

Throughout the week the kiddos practiced identifying the parts of a flower, including: the petals, seeds, stem, leaves, and roots. Students have begun to understand each parts function and role within the flower. The kids loved watching BrainPOP Jr. "Parts of a Plant" video. We also sang the song, "Parts of a Plant."

For journals this week the students were asked to draw a picture of a flower and to label the parts of the flower. Some kiddos were able to label their picture on their and some students needed teacher assistance.

Later in the week we read, From Seed to Plant. We discussed the needs of plants and created a chart of plant needs. We also sang the song, "What Do Plants Need?"  During centers the kiddos made their own "What Do Plants Need" flip book.

This week the kiddos created beautiful flowers using construction paper, newspaper, and watercolors!
